Lachung is a mountain village closes the Tibetan border, in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim. It's divided by the Lachung River. The village is home to the 19th-century Buddhist Lachung Monastery, surrounded by apple orchards. Nearby, the Yumthang Valley's Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary protects many species of rhododendron. The valley is also known for its waterfalls, pine forests and hot springs.

About Lachung

Lachung means the 'Small Pass' (so there must be a 'Big Pass' too? Yes, it's another Palace called Lachen. From Chunthang a road bifurcates as well as leads towards Lachen). Lachung is a small mountain village at an altitude of 8,610 ft and located concerning 118kms from Gangtok. Although the range looks easy, it takes about 6 hrs by cars and truck to get to Lachung from Gangtok, and the roadway although really scenic, is often not in good condition. Lachung is part of North Sikkim.

April to May is a great time to go as the rhododendrons are in full bloom during this time, and Yumthang valley lives up to its name - the valley of flowers. This is when the locals in their complete traditional outfits eat, consume alcohol and also do numerous social shows.
