Scenically situated on an elevated plateau and concealed in a horseshoe shaped formation of the Aravalli Mountains, Neemrana was built in 1464 AD and was the third capital of the descendants of Prithviraj Chauhan III. The Chauhans defeated the local chieftain Nimola Meo in battle, and were so impressed with his courage and chivalry, that they named their new capital after him.

Neemrana gradually grew and spread both horizontally and vertically all along the hillside, with every subsequent ruler adding new portions and wings to the original fort and palace. After India's independence and the abolition of privy purses, Maharaja Rajendra Singh moved out of the fort and the local villagers moved in, and over the next thirty years slowly ransacked almost everything. In the late 70's, the talented duo of Aman Nath and Francis Wacziarg rediscovered it and laid the foundation stone of the Neemrana Group of Hotels, by undertaking the monumental task of restoring Neemrana and turning it into an exclusive heritage hotel. The ruins of this imposing fort were sensitively reconstructed and today it is a most successful and extremely charismatic heritage hotel, built over ten levels and sprawling over twenty-five acres.
