North East India Tour Packages

Situated in a sensitive border region with limited road access, the northeast is India's predominant Adivasi region. It is becoming a popular destination for anglers and whitewater rafters

Meghalaya, "the abode of clouds", south of Assam, was previously part of Assam. It became a separate state of the Indian Union in 1972. It is a hilly region, very foggy in winter causing the traffic police to dress in fluorescent clothing. It is inhabited by three Adivasi groups: the Garos in the west, the Khasis in the centre, and the Jaintias in the east. They originally constituted independent little township kingdoms, the Seiyams, which the British annexed one by one to British India in the 19th century. The Gams are Tibetan. They once practised human sacrifice as part of their local religion. In 1848, under a treaty with the British, they agreed to stop displaying skulls in their houses. Archery stakes, a peculiar local form of gambling using arrows, is still a common amusement. North East India Tour Packages...

The Khasis are Mon-Khmers related to the Shans of Burma. Their religion, Seng Khasi, holds that God is everywhere and should not be represented or adored in a specific form. There are no temples, just prayer-halls for specific celebrations. The Khasis adorn themselves in jewellery made of gold and amber. lb commemorate their dead, they erect mawbynnas, monoliths arranged in groups of three or more that can be seen in most villages. The Pnars, generally known as Jaintias are closely related to the Khasis. The three peoples have matrilineal and matrilocal family systems. Missionaries in the 19th century converted most of them to Christianity but old traditions persist, especially their dances. A major dance festival, the Shat Silk Myasiern, the Festival of the Joyful Heart, is held in Shillong in April. In November, the Garo 100-drum festival in Tura celebrates the end of the harvesting season. North East India Tour Packages...

Shillong, the capital of Assam until 1972 and of Meghalaya since then, lies 100 km (60 miles) south of Guwahati, a three-hour drive through hills covered with pineapple and betel plantations, and pine forests, It passes along Bara Pani (Umian Lake). North East India Tour Packages from Delhi...

Shillong has been called the "Scotland of the East" because of its climate and its location at an altitude of 1,500 metres (4,900 ft). Here the British and rich Bengalis built cottages, a golf course and polo grounds. It is a small city with a market, Bara Bazaar, selling Nepali silver and Khasi gold jewellery, spices and textiles. Shillong spreads across hills covered with English-style country houses, the largest being Raj Bhavan, the summer residence of the governor of Assam and Meghalaya, and the Pinewood Hotel. Nearby are the Ward Lake and Botanical Garden. North East India Tour Packages...

Cherrapunji, 56 km (35 miles) to the south, is reputedly the world's wettest place with 11,500 mm (430 in) of rain each year. The most interesting spot is Mawphluang, 24 km (15 miles) further south, a barren and windy plateau covered with monoliths. Shillong Peak offers a fine view of the neighbouring hills.

Access to Garo country is difficult. A road from Shillong is being built hit at present, the only way to reach it is to travel to Guwahati and then southwest to Tura. The villages have retained their traditional architecture and some traditional buildings like the bachelors' dormitory at Rongreng (Williamnagar). North East India Tour Packages...

Arunachal Pradesh

The area has 600,00o inhabitants divided into 82 different groups of people, the largest groups being the Apatanis. Khamptis, Padmas and Miris. Most are Buddhists. To the east, near the border with China and Burma, the Brahmaputra forms a lake. Brahmakund, before entering the plains of Assam. Bathing here is believed to wash away one's sins and Hindus come by the thousands on Makar Sankranti day in mid-January. The old road to Mandalay begins at Ledo. Nagaland

Remote Nagaland is inhabited by a variety of Tibeto-Burmese peoples, speaking more than 20 different dialects, the largest groups being the Aos, Angamis and Konyaks. These Nagas were once headhunters, but the practice was abandoned two generations ago. North East India Tour Packages...

Cacharis, one of the Naga peoples, once established a Hindu kingdom at Dimapur from where they used to raid Assam and Burma. The Ahoms of Assam established their authority over the Cacharis at the end of the 17th century, but as soon as Burma invaded Assam in 1816, the Naga raids on the plains were resumed. In 1832, the British, while establishing a road link between Assam and Manipur, met the Nagas for the first time. For a few years they made attempts to control them, Naga raids being followed by punitive expeditions. In 1879 the British outpost at Kohima 3 came under Naga siege for a month. A state of permanent peace was finally reached in 1889. North East India Tour Packages...

During World War II the Japanese and the Indian National Army launched an attack on Kohima, taking half of the city in 1943. The objective was to reach Dimapur, a vital rail-head for supplies to British Army units in forward areas. Kohima proved to be the furthest point west reached by the Japanese. North East India Tour Packages from Delhi...

In the war against the Japanese, the Nagas were of great help to the allied forces, carrying supplies to the front, evacuating the wounded, and spying behind enemy lines. Following Indian independence, some Nagas grouped in a Naga National Council demand autonomy but soon successionist elements were asking for independence. In November 1975, at Shillong the Government of India and Naga leaders reached an agreement, whereby the Nagas accepted the Indian Constitution, but there are still occasional outbreaks of violence Naga villages are usually perched on hills and are surrounded by a stone wall. One, Barra Basti, is a suburb of Kohima. To the east of Kohima, at Dimapur, are the remains of the former capital of the Cachar Hills razed by the Ahoms in 1536. North East India Tour Packages...

Manipur

This is another former princely state on the Burmese border, but it is easier to visit. Meitheis, a Tibeto-Burmese people related to the Shans, form 60 percent of the population. They live in the valleys and have developed Jagoi, a ManiP uri dance style which is performed at festivals and is accompanied by the pang (a double-headed barrel drum). The 29 other peoples, most of them Tibeto-Burmese and now mostly Christian, form one-third of the population and live in the hills. The largest of these groups are the Lotha, the Konyak and the Nagas. North East India Tour Packages from Delhi...

Manipuris are reputedly fierce fighters. They excel in martial arts such as the spear dance (takhousarol), the sword fight (thanghaicol) and wrestling (mukna). The Manipuris have a history of conflict with their neighbours in Arakan and other border regions of Burma, which they invaded in 1738. North East India Tour Packages...

In 1819, the Raja of Manipur, who previously had paid tribute to the Burmese crown, did not attend the coronation of Burma's new King Bagyidaw. The Burmese sent out a punitive expedition. The Anglo-Burmese War was caused partly by this incursion.

Burma was defeated, and by the Treaty of Yandaboo, on 24 February 1826, recognized British sovereignty over Manipur. After years of relative peace a revolt took place in 1891 during which the British chief commissioner of Assam was killed. The rising was crushed and its leader, Tikenderjit Ss, the maharaja's brother, hanged. There was trouble again in 1930, when a self-styled prophet, Jadonang, announced the imminent departure of the British. He was executed and the priestess of his cult, Rani Gaidiniliou, who was only 17, was sentenced to life imprisonment. She was released when India gained its independence. In 1944, the Indian National Army and the Japanese put Imphal under siege from March to June. They were repulsed and in March 1945, General Slim's 14th Army marched to Mandalay from the Manipur hills. In 1949 Manipur became a Union Territory and a fully fledged state of the Indian Union in 1972. North East India Tour Packages from Delhi...

Imphal, the capital, can be reached by road from Kohima after a 130-km (80-mile) drive along the famous road to Mandalay. It has two war cemeteries, a museum displaying Adivasi artefacts, Kwairamb Bazaar, a women's market, the Raja's Palace, Royal Polo Grounds and, nearby at Langthabal. the Raja's Summer Palace. Mizoram and Tripura

The former Lushai Hills District, Mizoram is bordered by Bangladesh on one side and Burma on the other. Related to the Shan, Mizos are a group of peoples (Lushais, Hmars, Pawis) that came relatively recently to India. They started raiding tea plantations in 1871. The British retaliated and established control over the area in 1872, but could not establish peace until 1892. The British then introduced the Inner Line system. Only missionaries were allowed through. As a result, 95 percent of the population is Christian and literacy has reached 86 percent in some areas. At Indian independence Mizoram became a Union Territory, and was granted full statehood in 1987. North East India Tour Packages from Delhi...

Tripura is the former princely state of Tipperah. The population, mostly of Tibeto-Burmese origin, took up Vaishnava Hinduism early, and was ruled by rajas until Indian independence. Other major groups in Tripura are the Kukis, related to the Shans of Burma, Chakmas, Moghs, Lusharis and Riangs. North East India Tour Packages from Delhi...

Tripura had been at war with her neighbours when the British, taking advantage of a feud between Maharajah Krishna Manikya and the Nawabs of Bengal, intervened and established a protectorate. Following independence, Tripura joined the Indian Union in 1949 and became a state in 1972. Visitors should check whether the region is currently open to foreigners. Agartala is a small town of 60,000 people, surrounded by hills on three sides, with a palace erected in 1940 by Maharaja Bikram, a philanthropist who helped Rabindranath Tagore to finance the Shantiniketan University in Bengal. The palace, set in "Mughal Gardens", is now the State Assembly House, It is said that the old cannons on display used to be fired in salute once a year, until the 16th century, when 1,000 human sacrifices were held in Agartala.
