Travel information on Wagah Border, Amritsar<\/h2>\n

Amritsar is home to the Harmandir Sahib or the Golden temple, the cultural and spiritual center for the Sikh religion. The golden temple attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal, more than 100,000 visitors on week days alone and is the most popular destination for Non resident Indians (NRI’s) in the whole of India. The city is also a home to the Sikh temporal and political authority, Akal Takht, as well as the Sikh Parliament.<\/p>\n

The main commercial activities include tourism, farm produce, handicrafts, carpets and fabrics, service trades, and light engineering. The city is known for its rich culture and cuisine, and for the tragic incident of Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 under British government’s Rule. Amritsar is home to Central Khalsa Orphanage, which was once a home to Udham Singh, an important figure in the Indian independence movement.<\/p>\n

Wagah border is named after Wahga in Pakistan,which is the name of a village through which the controversial Radcliffe Line, the boundary demarcation line dividing India and Pakistan during the Partition of India, was drawn. The Wagha village was divided by independence in 1947. The eastern half of the village remains in the Republic of India while the western half is in Pakistan. Every evening an elaborate Wagah border ceremony takes place which attracts huge crowds on the Indian side. The ceremony lasts for around 45 minutes,. It starts with high patriotic spirits from sides of the border. Soldiers march towards the gate at the border, which is thrown open when they reach there. The soldiers salute each other and start lowering the flags.The flags are lowered at the same time on both the sides. The soldiers retrieve and fold the flags, the gate slams shut, and a trumpet sounds the end of the ceremony. The soldiers then return with their country’s respective flag.<\/p>\n
